How to Get 110 Roundtrip Southwest Flights for Free
With record profits Southwest Airlines just announced some exciting news:
- They will be launching flights to beautiful Providenciales, Turks & Caicos out of Ft. Lauderdale
- New flights to the Cayman Islands from Ft. Lauderdale
- New flights from San Diego to San Jose del Cabo/Los Cabos, Mexico
- New services in Sacramento
With Southwest adding more and more foreign flights it’s now the best time to start taking advantage of all that Southwest has to offer!
Southwest’s loyalty program is Rapid Rewards which actually has some great offerings at the moment. Through Chase, Southwest offers 3 exciting credit cards with very generous sign up bonuses. Southwest also offers the ability to earn a Companion Pass if you happened to earn 110,000 Rapid Reward points within one year.
Wait what? Companion pass?
Yes companion pass! When you earn 110,000 Rapid Reward points within the same calendar year Southwest awards you with a companion pass. The ability to fly a friend along with you on any Southwest flight for free. This is good for the year you got the points in as well as the next. That means you can literally be getting buy one get one free on Southwest for 2 whole years! You have to select your companion in advance, however Southwest lets you change who this person is 3 times a year.
Easiest Way to Get It
Luckily Southwest offers some easy ways to get those 110,000 Rapid Reward points. That way you don’t have to try to spend $110,000 on Southwest a year. As mentioned earlier Southwest offers 3 credit cards:
- Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier offering 40,0000 Rapid Rewards points after spending $2,000 in 3 months
- Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus offering 40,0000 Rapid Rewards points after spending $2,000 in 3 months
- Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business offering 60,0000 Rapid Rewards points after spending $3,000 in 3 months
If you got either the Premier or Plus along with the Premier Business you’d end up with 100,000 Rapid Reward points. At this point the Companion Pass would be only 10,000 points away. Luckily for you there is an easy way you can get those 10,000 points: referrals. Southwest and Chase are currently paying 10,000 points for every person you refer for one of these cards! So show a friend or spouse this article and how lucrative Southwest can be, you can get them to sign up with your referral link so that you can easily qualify for that Companion Pass!
If you don’t have a business and wouldn’t qualify for the Business Premier, you can still get both the Premier and Plus. With 80,000 points, you only need to refer 3 people or spend the difference since every spent dollar equals a Rapid Rewards point.
I don’t really need a Companion Pass, is it still worth it?
If you don’t necessarily have a need for the Companion Pass I would still give the Southwest cards serious consideration. The bonuses are pretty valuable.
For example, flying from San Francisco to Las Vegas would be around 936 points or around 2,000 points round trip. That means just getting the Premier or Plus with 40,000 points would get you 20 round trip flights!
If you managed to get to 110,000 points AND the Companion Pass that would be 55 round trip flights for 2 people! That is amazing for just signing up for two credit cards!
Remember the Companion Pass is for the year you get 110,000 points and the following year. To really maximize it, it would be smart to apply for the cards at the end of the year. That way you meet the minimum spending requirements and get the pass early in the year.
Also, keep in mind that Chase typically won’t approve any applications if you’ve gotten more than 5 new credit cards within the last 24 months.
So if you haven’t already maybe consider applying for the Southwest cards and getting that Companion Pass to milk Southwest as much as possible!
Don’t forget to add your new cards to Etoshin as well to keep track of the annual fees and Rapid Reward points!
